Sualkuchi (Guwahati), Mar 26 (ANI): A fashion design institute has been set up in Sualkuchi region to train students in the modern techniques of silk designing and weaving.

The Sualkuchi Institute of Fashion Technology (SIFT) has been set up with the aim of reviving the silk industry at Sualkuchi and create more job opportunities by creating a skilled labor force in the field of fashion. he institute has been set up under the aegis of North East Council and National Institute of Fashion Kolkata.

It offers the state of the art technology and trains its students in different aspects of fashion like design, exploration and development of a design bank specific to the Sualkuchi region through conduct of computer-aided designing programmes, training and introduction of contemporary designs, colours, schemes and other aspects.

"We are working to generate more entrepreneurs for the future. We are trying to collaborate with different institutions so that students can get financial assistance to set up their own units after they complete their training here," said Partha Sarathi Borbora, Principal, SIFT. he institute would provide a common platform for fashion and design education, research and training.

The institute has also tied up with Northeast Development Finance Corporation Limited that has set up a haat for the students to showcase their designs and products.

The institute also offers a 50 day entrepreneurship development programme on fashion and textile designing under the integrated training programme on fashion and textile designing. We know about designing but how to apply a design and how to go about marketing, we are learning all this at the SIFT," Rumi Sing, student

"It's really important here to learn, because most of the times North East students go outside so instead of going outside they can do this fashion design here," added Sharikha Chaudhary, another student.

With the establishment of SIFT, there is hope among the weavers of the region that they can now create a place for their products in different markets. (ANI)
