Islamabad, Mar 15(ANI): The material for the press conference that was held a day after the assassination of former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto was provided by a high ranking Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) official, it has been learnt.
he statements of former Interior Ministry spokesman Brigadier (retired) Javed Iqbal Cheema and former Military Intelligence (MI) Director General Ijaz Shah have been obtained from the Interior Ministry and Federal Investigation Agency sources by the Dawn.
The statements revealed that Cheema had confessed before the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) that Major General Nusrat Naeem, the then director general of the Counter Intelligence wing of the ISI, had provided him the content for the press conference, which was held on December 28, 2007.
Sources said that Naeem, who works in Rawalpindi's Behria Town since his retirement, could be included in the investigations.
Benazir was targeted in a gun and bomb attack as she was leaving Liaqat Bagh in Rawalpindi after addressing a public rally on December 27, 2007.
Musharraf, who was Pakistan's President when the assassination took place, is alleged to have been part of a "broad conspiracy" to have his political rival Benazir killed before elections. (ANI)
