Tsunami crisis: Troops rescue 60-year-old Japanese man

Minamisoma (Japan) , Mon, 14 Mar 2011 ANI

Minamisoma (Japan), Mar. 14 (ANI): Japanese troops have rescued a 60-year-old man who floated 15 kilometers out to sea on the roof of his home after a tsunami engulfed the country's northeastern coast on Friday.

The Daily Telegraph quoted a Japanese Defense Ministry spokesman, as saying that Hiromitsu Shinkawa was pushed out to sea while he clung to the roof of his home after a tsunami swept away his wife.

For two days, he tried to get the attention of helicopters and ships that passed by, but without success.

Finally, on Sunday, a Japanese military vessel spotted the 60-year-old waving a red cloth 15 kilometers offshore from the earthquake-ravaged city of Minamisoma.

Japanese troops used a small boat to pluck him from the ocean.

Shinkawa has been admitted to a hospital where he was in remarkably good health after his dramatic rescue. (ANI)
