Midnapore, Mar 14 (ANI): Frequent shutdowns called by the Maoists is severely affecting the transport business in West Bengal's Midnapore region.
People in transport business expressed their concern saying if things remained this way then conditions will become worse.
" Rare shutdowns are alright, but considering the forest area of West Midnapore's Bankura and Purulia, shutdowns are regular things here. These shutdowns affect business environment, as it is a backward district of Bengal. Due to regular shutdowns, it is no longer safe to conduct business here," said Anil Sikaria, a truck owner.
He said during shutdowns goods like foodgrains, fruits and vegetables and meat products rot in vehicles leading to huge losses for the businessmen.
He urged the state government to take appropriate action towards preventing frequent shutdowns and saving them from incurring losses.
"Agitations in any form like burning of trucks or if any protest converts into violence then we face loss in business. Drivers don't want to conduct business here, they are scared to travel in trucks because they worry if they would come back alive or not. These conditions are extremely difficult for us," said Sikaria, a truck owner.
Initially, the Maoists contended they are fighting for the cause of poor and weaker sections of the society whereas over the past two decades they have turned extremely violent and do not hesitate to kill innocent civilians. (ANI)
