Hamas team embarks on Arab tour via Egypt

Gaza , Fri, 04 Mar 2011 ANI

Gaza, Mar 4 (ANI): A Hamas delegation has reportedly embarked on an Arab tour for the first time since Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down last month.

The delegation, which was led by Mahmoud Zahar, a member of the Islamic movement's politburo, and included Khalil al-Haya, another political bureau member, and Justice Minister in the deposed Hamas government Mohammed al-Ghoul, left via the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, China's Xinhua news agency quoted Hamas sources as saying.

The three plan to visit Sudan and Syria where the politburo of the Gaza ruler Hamas is based.

It is not known whether the team will meet any Egyptian officials during their visit.

Earlier, it was a thorny task for Hamas officials to travel through Rafah, the only gate for the Gazans to the outside world, when Mubarak was the President of Egypt.

According to the source, the head of Egypt's Higher Military Council, Mohamad Hussain Tantawi, had a telephonic conversation with deposed Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haneya on Thursday and thanked the later for safeguarding the Gaza-Egypt borders during Egypt's unrest. (ANI)
