Balakrishnan case: SC asks petitioner to submit affidavit in two weeks

New Delhi , Fri, 04 Mar 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Mar 4 (ANI): The Supreme Court, which heard a complaint filed against National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairperson and former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan, seeking a CBI probe into his assets, on Friday gave the petitioner two more weeks time to place a further affidavit on record.

The apex court had earlier on February 18 asked Attorney General G E Vahanvati to apprise it about the status of a complaint filed against Balakrishnan.

A bench headed by Chief Justice S H Kapadia had given the attorney general 14 days to file the status report on the complaint against Balakrishnan.

A Delhi-based journalist filed the complaint on May 5, 2010, seeking a CBI probe into the assets of Balakrishnan and his family members

The complaint said that Balakrishnan's son Pradeep had mediated with Dubai based NRI businessman Yusuf Ali for settling the legal battle between Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Natural Resources Ltd (RNRL) over Krishna Godavari (KG) basin gas supply.

The complaint also pointed out the alleged role played by the former CJI in granting relief to CPM leader Pinarayi Vijayan in the sensational SNC-Lavalin case.

"Justice K G Balakrishnan has fast-tracked the SNCLavalin case due to pressure exerted on him by his family members, who are very friendly with Pinarayi Vijayan," the complaint said.

It noted that a complaint about NHRC chief was made to the Vice President, which was forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs. (ANI)
