Shahnawaz Hussain supports Vastanvi

New Delhi , Thu, 27 Jan 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Jan 27 (ANI): Reacting on the resignation of Vice-Chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband University Ghulam Mohammed Vastanvi, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Shahnawaz Hussain has said the Central government or the people who do not believe in the fact that Gujarat is peaceful should prove it.

Slamming the Central Government on the issue, Hussain said if the Government has any objection to the statement made by the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, then they must prove it.

"If you abuse the Gujarat government for the eight years back riots, you should also appreciate the peace and normalcy that is prevailing in the State as well. If somebody states a fact that peace and harmony prevails in the State and it is moving in the path of development and progress, then why people have objections with it? The Indian government or any person who has objections to this fact could prove the alleged differences prevailing in the State?" he added.

Vastanvi, who hails from Surat and was elected Vice-Chancellor on January 10, has been facing protests from students at the seminary after he had said that Muslims should forget the communal pogrom of 2002 and move on and that the community did not face discrimination in Modi's State at present.

The cleric however is maintaining that he hasn't come under pressure to quit and moreover the issue of Gujarat Chief Minister has nothing to do with his resignation.

"Narendra Modi has nothing to do with my resignation. I didn't want unnecessary tension in the Daloom because of me. I have not come under any pressure to quit," said Vastanvi. (ANI)
