Heart attacks more likely in winter

New Delhi, Tue, 14 Jan 2014 NI Wire

Doctors and medical experts believe that people above the age of 30 must remain very cautious during winter season. Very people know that heart attacks are at their high during the winter season.

People already having heart related problem should be extra cautious during this time.

Consuming alcohol to warm body in winter is common but experts say this practice is harmful if exceeds limit. Too much alcohol consumption can cause atrial fibrillation, the most common irregular heartbeat problem called arrhythmia.

In this, people tend to suffer from palpitations, fainting, chest pain or congestive heart failure.

Experts say every second person in the age group of 30 and above is prone to heart failure during winter.

Symptoms of heart disease include:

  • Irregular discomfort in chest
  • Severe sweating
  • Pain in the neck, arms, jaws and shoulders
  • Shortness of breath

People should take these heart symptoms very seriously and be extra cautious at what they eat, drink and do during this season. A regular checkup on cardiovascular risk factors is one way to ensure that the winter season doesn't harm one's health.

Overdoing anything like exercise, long walk, heavy lifting and exhausting oneself in winter is not advised by doctors as this makes the heart stress out and it leads to a heart attack.

Arteries become narrow with the fall in temperature, as a result of which the heart has to put in more effort to pump the blood.

Diabetic patients should also be cautious during the winter season. Cholesterol levels fluctuate significantly with the change in season, which may leave people with borderline high cholesterol with greater cardiovascular risk during the winter months.

People should avoid overeating during winter and should rather eat in small quantities at regular intervals.
