Two nabbed in Bihar with Rs.10 lakh in fake notes

Bihar,Crime/Disaster/Accident, Sun, 12 Jan 2014 IANS

Patna, Jan 12 (IANS) A team of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested two persons Sunday with Rs.10 lakh in fake currency notes from the Muzaffarpur railway station in Bihar.

"They were nabbed when they were trying to flee from the station," a district police official said.

The consignment, coming from Bangladesh, was headed for the East Champaran district headquarters of Motihari. Muzaffarpur is about 70 km from here.

DRI officials interrogated the two arrested people to collect more information about people involved in the Fake Indian Currency Note racket in the state.

Officials admitted that Bihar was emerging as a hub for distribution of fake Indian currency notes.

Till a few years ago, counterfeit notes brought from Bangladesh were smuggled to Nepal via West Bengal and Bihar before being pumped back into the country. Now, those are not sent to Nepal but distributed from the border areas, officials said.

The DRI arrested nine people in Bihar during January-November 2013 and recovered fake notes worth Rs.18 lakh from them.

Other security agencies like Bihar Police, Sashastra Seema Bal and the Narcotics Control Bureau have also seized fake notes worth over Rs.20 lakh this year and made half-a-dozen arrests.
