According to a new research by researchers, a yoga class once a week could help lower back pain effectively and help you reduce the consumption of pain-killer medication usually taken to get relief from back pain.
The results of the study suggests that patients interested in trying yoga for lower back pain could get benefited significantly by joining a medically appropriate weekly yoga class.
The study was headed by first author Robert Saper, MD, MPH, associate professor of family medicine at BUSM and director of integrative medicine at BMC.
Saper said that patients with lower income usually have worse lower back pain as a result of limited access to both mainstream health care treatments and complementary treatments such as yoga, massage and acupuncture.
The study involved a 12-week randomized trial of which 95 participants were predominantly low-income adults suffering from moderate to severe lower back pain and were divided into two groups.
Of the both groups, first group attended yoga class once a week, while the other attended twice a week. Moreover, both the groups were encouraged to practice the poses and techniques at home.
After 12 weeks, participants of both groups experienced similar and substantial decreases in their pain level and need for pain medications. However, no additional benefits were seen in those attending the classes twice a week. Also, their ability to perform daily functions improved.
The study has been published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
