A new research would provide the diabetic patients with great relief as it can cut down the need of using insulin injections for them.
Michel Pairet, head of pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim's non-clinical research and development, said this treatment could also treat diabetes if the disease is diagnosed in its early stage.
Early trials of the research have shown quite promising results to strengthen the beta cells in the pancreas, which is responsible for the secretion of insulin to control high levels of glucose in the blood, the Daily Express reported.
Stem cells are used for the protection and regeneration of beta cells that are usually damaged by high sugar diets in the process.
Pairet said that in the next phase of research they will try to protect the beta cell in the pancreas and maybe to cure diabetes by inducing the regeneration of the beta cells.
He said that during diabetes, the beta cells disappear as a result inflammatory mechanisms, thought all the mechanisms still unknown.
Pairet explained that you can protect the beta cells or you can identify factors for the regeneration of the cells on the basis of progenitor cells and try to help these cells regenerate, meaning that the treatment could help stop or delay the disease and its complications.
