April 25 is observed as World Malaria Day worldwide after it was first marked in 2007 by (World Health Organisation) WHO during 60th session of the World Health Assembly. The basic idea behind celebrating the day is to create awareness about Malaria among the mass to fight the epidemic of the disease globally.
Like every year, a theme has been decided for World Malaria day 2013, which is "Invest in the future: Defeat malaria". The basic objective behind the theme is to highlight the importance of investment and political commitment required to over root the disease. The day also encourages new volunteers to join the global malaria partnership and appeals to the educational institutions to showcase new research and developments in the field of prevention and cure of the disease.
According to the latest World Health Organisation reports, Africa is the most affected continent where 90 percent of deaths occur due to malaria only. Though, WHO claims that the mortality rates of malaria have fallen by more than 25 percent since 2010, still they have registered 655,000 deaths caused by malaria every year and 219 million cases of the malaria registered around the world each year.
Moreover, as per the World Malaria Report 2012, 13 percent of global malaria burned is carried by the South -East Asian region of which, India alone shares 66 percent of the burden followed by Myanmar, 18 percent and Indonesia 10 percent respectively.
Malaria is a life threatening disease that occurs due to the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquito. The initial symptoms of the disease involve headache, fever chills and tendency of vomiting. Though malaria is a curable disease but so far there is no licensed vaccine against malaria.
