World Hemophilia Day is observed across the world on April 17 every year by the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) with an objective to create awareness for hemophilia and other bleeding related disorders. Started in 1989 by WFH, the day also marks the birthday of WFH founder Frank Schnabel.
The World Federation of Hemophilia is continuously engaged in creating awareness about the blood related disease Hemophilia among the common people and raise funds for bringing development in the field of treatment of the disease.
Haemophilia, a hereditary bleeding disorder, which prevents the blood from clotting properly and leads to internal bleeding among the patients and affects the joints, muscles and vital organs like the brain commonly. The disease is a lifelong disease, which can lead to leads to permanent disability.
Haemophilia is basically of two types called A and B types of which A type indicates the low levels of clotting factor VIII and Type B indicates low levels of clotting factor IX
About 400,000 people suffer from hemophilia worldwide and around 16,000 patients are registered in India. About 17,000 people in the United States have haemophilia.
