Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) national general secretary Praveen Khandelwal has said that the unanimous decision of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce to ask the Government of India not to conclude Free Trade Agreement with European Union in haste and particularly when the subject matter is pending before the Standing Committee, is a welcome and logical step and certainly a step to protect the dignity of Parliamentary system of the Country.
He further added that it is noteworthy that the Government is gearing itself to conclude the FTA with EU on forthcoming 14-15 April, 2013 when Union Commerce Minister Shri Anand Sharma is scheduled to hold meeting with European Union Commissioner at Brusels.
The CAIT in association with various other groups like Forum against FTAs, Bhartiya Kisan Morcha, National Hawkers Federation was lobbying since last ten days against FTA with EU. CAIT National President Mr. B. C. Bhartia said that the said FTA will have adverse impact on our economy and particulalry on certain important sectors like dairy products, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, small and medium industries and internal trade of the Country since the FTA is "one sided" granting maximum advantages to European Union to dump their products in Indian market.
Khandelwal regretted, " It is unfortunate that instead of drawing policies in considering the Indian economy, the policy makers who have gained education in overseas are relying upon the reports, surveys and studies of global agencies and that's why the economy is showing a down trend.
