Okhla Composting Plant of SDMC got Carbon Credits and Rs. 25 Lac from United Nations Frame Work Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and becomes the first composting planting the country. An advance of Rs. 25 Lac against net CER (Carbon Emission Reduction) earning at Okhla Compost plant was handed over to Commissioner, SDMC by Mahesh Babu, Managing Director, Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (ILandFS).
The Okhla Compost plant in Public Private Partnership (PPP) with ILandFS is the first plant in the country, which got organic certification and carbon credits. Till now in this plant two lac ton Municipal Solid Waste has been processed into high compost plant through aerobic composting technology. The speciality of this plant acquires carbon credits equal to the Green House Gas emits out from the vehicles running on the roads of Delhi in a day. SDMC is trying to install this kind of localised plant, which converts 500 ton Municipal Solid Waste into compost.
ILandFS Environment is preparing a programme to upgrade this plant. In this programme there will be a facility to produce refuse derived fuel and treat leachate in eco-friendly manner in order to reduce the rejects.
The Okhla Compost plant had been revived in Public Private Partnership (PPP) between unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi and ILandFS Environment wherein an agreement was signed to rehabilitate and upgrade the Okhla compost plant in May 2007 with investment by ILandFS Environment and carbon finance support i.e. CDM benefits.
