World Glaucoma Day: Fight against the 'Silent thief of sight'

Glaucoma has become a major threat today and it has turned into a fast gaining diseases in the world. Due to ignorance, proper care and lack of knowledge regarding the disease, today it has turned a major fatal for the maximum parts of population of the world. To raise awareness among the people regarding the disease Glaucoma, 12 March is internationally recognized as World Glaucoma Day.

Due to its severness and fatality, glaucoma has been called as the 'silent thief of sight'. The early detection and treatment is essential as it can distort vision and can lead to irreversible blindness and hence it is requirement of time that people should be make aware and careful to fight the menace of Glaucoma in today life style.

It is shocking and surprising that today Glaucoma has become the second-leading cause of blindness today. Report suggests that Glaucoma is one of the leading cause of blindness due illiteracy and lack of awareness by the people.

However there are many reasons behind the appearance of symptoms of Glaucoma for a human being. Generally it appears after the age of 40 years.

Reasons behind the emergence of Glaucoma

Experts say that someone who has been suffering from lifestyle diseases like diabetes, hypertension and hormonal concerns like thyroid disorders can be a soft target for the disease.

If the condition is detected early enough, it is possible to arrest the development or slow the progression with medical and surgical means. Screening for glaucoma in the general population is however unsupported by the evidence.

If someone who has a history of taking steroid for a long time, can be a victim for a Glaucoma disorders.

It is advisable that the loss of vision often occurs gradually over a long period of time so its symptoms appears only occur when the disease is quite advanced. However prevention is not difficult from the diseases but only if someone approached Doctor timely. It is beneficial for people to go for regular eye check ups to ascertain the normal intra ocular pressure and to detect the any visual defects.

Any one, who find some inability to adjust the eyes to darkened rooms, should be careful about the symptoms.

The poor night vision and frequent changes in prescription of eyeglass is also matter of concern. Apart from these, the blurred vision, seeing railbow coloured haloes around the light are the symptoms, which must be, shared your Doctors on time.

However the appearance of these symptoms should be taken as preventive measure and one must contact to the physician. It must be in our mind that Glaucoma can be controlled and the requirement is only to detects early and for this regular visit to the Doctor is the only key to preserve vision and prevent blindness.

World Glaucoma Day, 12th March provides a platform to educate people and aware them from Glaucoma, the 'silent thief of sight.'
