North Korea officially confirmed on Tuesday that it has successfully conducted a third nuclear test to safeguard national security against hostile US policy.
South Korean Defense Ministry also believes that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has conducted a nuclear test on Tuesday.
A 5.1-magnitude earthquake was detected in the DPRK, a potential sign that the country has finally undertaken its third nuclear test. The earthquake was detected at 11:57 local time (0257 GMT) in the DPRK's Kilju County, North Hamkyung Province, where a nuclear test site is located. The area around has little or no history of earthquakes or natural seismic hazards.
South Korea military has been immediately put on heightened alert to deter potential cross-border provocations following the reported DPRK test.
North Korea has apparently conducted its third underground nuclear bomb test, as the U.S. Geological Survey reported a seismic disturbance centered near the site of the secretive regime's two previous nuclear tests.
U.S. analysts said North Korea's first bomb test, in October 2006, produced an explosive yield at less than 1 kiloton (1,000 tons) of TNT.
A second test in May 2009 is believed to have been about two kilotons, National Intelligence Director James Clapper told a Senate committee in 2012.
