US wireless carriers oppose Samsung's proposed anti-theft 'kill switch' in smartphones

Washington, Wed, 20 Nov 2013 ANI

Washington, Nov. 20 (ANI): The United States Wireless Association and major mobile carriers have rejected the idea of a "kill switch" security measure being added to Samsung's popular Android phones for preventing mobile theft.

San Francisco district attorney George Gascon said that the companies fear losing reliable profits that come from selling cellular insurance plans to customers, the Verge reports.

According to the report, these insurance plans, which mostly cover lost or stolen items, always demand a regular monthly fee and high deductible, when phones need to be replaced.

Gascon has been negotiating with Samsung to add stricter anti-theft features to its products, the report added.

However, the CTIA has raised concerns that devices could be maliciously reset by hackers. (ANI)
