Sanofi to use wind power for new pharma plant

Karnataka,Business/Economy,Environment/Wildlife, Tue, 06 Aug 2013 IANS

Bangalore, Aug 6 (IANS) Global pharma major Sanofi India will use wind power for its greenfield manufacturing plant at Ankleshwar in Gujarat.

"We have signed an agreement with wind turbine maker Suzlon Energy for a 2.1 megawatt (MW) offsite windmill station to generate renewable power for captive consumption at our Ankleshwar plant," Sanofi managing director Shailesh Ayyangar said in a statement here Tuesday.

Ankleshwar is about 200km from Ahmedabad.

The Indian subsidiary of the French drug maker is using biomass from agro waste to generate energy for its manufacturing facility in Goa since 2012.

"The biomass project not only helped create jobs for locals, but also reduced the steam cost at our Goa plant and minimise our dependence on fossil fuels," Ayyangar asserted.

The Ankleshwar plant produces solid dose formulations and active pharma ingredients for the Indian and export markets.

As the fifth largest wind turbine supplier, the Pune-based Suzlon has installed machinery to generate 22,500mw of wind energy across the 32 countries worldwide.
