Johannesburg, May 7 (ANI): World football governing body FIFA has put strong clamps on racism by proposing strict rules under which teams face being thrown out of competitions or even relegated if their staff or fans are found guilty of racism or discrimination.
FIFA's new anti-racism task force also wants an official at stadiums with the specific job of identifying acts of discrimination, and for countries and clubs across the world to provide a 'concrete action plan' to fight the problem and to implement sanctions 'in a harmonised way', Sport24 reports.
FIFA vice president Jeffrey Webb, who also heads the task force, said that FIFA has a special responsibility in the way they can impact football and society.
The report further said that although the task force is primarily focusing on the application of sanctions for racism and discrimination, it has however, proposed a two-stage warning, ranging from fines and matches played behind closed doors for first or minor offences to more radical punishments like points deductions or relegation for repeat offenders or more serious offences.
According to the task force, having racism observers stationed at stadiums will ease the pressure on referees and smooth the availability of evidence for the disciplinary committees to take decisions.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter set up the task force after AC Milan midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng, who is also in the task force, led his team-mates off the pitch when he was racially abused during a friendly against Italian fourth-tier side Pro Patria in January, the report added. (ANI)
