Modi targets UPA, propagates 'Gujarat growth model'

Kolkata , Tue, 09 Apr 2013 ANI

Kolkata, Apr. 9 (ANI): Asserting that West Bengal has suffered a lot in the past 32 years due to mis-governance, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday lashed out at the UPA Government for neglecting non-Congress ruled states.

"If you are a UPA state, you get a (certain) kind of treatment, and, if you are a non-UPA state, you get a different (kind of) treatment," he said.

Emphasizing that the discrimination by the Manmohan Singh-led UPA Government is adversely affecting development in non-Congress ruled states, Modi said: " It is due to the discriminatory attitude of the Centre that many states are not being able to create wealth and grow according to their potential."

Modi, who addressed captains of industry here, blamed the former Left Front Government in West Bengal of creating obstacles in the state's path of development over the past 32 years.

"Bengal too was potholed for 32 years, and filling this is a huge effort, and it is being done now. I believe steps are being taken in the right direction in Bengal but it will take many years," he said.

The Gujarat Chief Minister claimed that the former NDA Government, which was led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was equal in its approach towards all states and never indulged in any sort of discrimination.

"When states do well, the Centre takes the credit. And, when in trouble, it puts the entire burden on states. This attitude is not right for the integrity of the country," he said, while highlighting the injustice meted out to non-Congress ruled states by the UPA Government.

"The government at the Centre is hitting out at all non-UPA states. UPA has destroyed the dreams of Indian states," he added.

Modi, who is touted by many to be the BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate in 2014, also left no stones unturned in praising the achievements of his state as he told industry captains about the vibrant growth model in Gujarat.

"Gujarat is perhaps the only state where cataract operations are performed on cattle, they get dental treatment - and that has resulted in 112 cattle diseases being eradicated in Gujarat. Nobody has a textile policy like us. It is based on five Fs. Farm to fibre; fibre to factory; factory to fashion; fashion to foreign," said Modi.

"A Gujarati is always a tourist. Wherever you go in the world, you will always find Gujaratis there. But Gujarat was never a tourist destination. We focused on that. Now in the last two years, Gujarat's growth in the tourism sector is double of the whole country's," he added.

Modi claimed that Gujarat is fast progressing towards becoming the solar capital in the world.

"We were the first state who brought in a solar policy and we set the prices a 13 rupees a unit. The Government of India offers 19 rupees a unit for solar power, but they have not been able to set up even 100 MW. We have got 3000 MW of solar energy and we are now achieving price parity," he added.

A confident Modi said Gujarat is at the moment a revenue surplus state.

"We have not raised taxes in 12 years, just plugged all leakages," he added.

Modi also took a jibe at the corporate culture present in West Bengal that leads to frequent strikes and closed factories. (ANI)
