Washington, April 7 (ANI): A luxurious bus stop in Arlington, Va., cost 1 million dollar to build, but it leaves commuters waiting for transportation exposed to wind and rain.
The backlash from the stainless steel bus stop that sits at the corner of Columbia Pike and Walter Reed Dr. has prompted the county to put its plans to build 23 more stops like it at more than 900,000 dollars each on hold, the New York Daily News reported.
The so-called "super stop" that boast a heated concrete floor and a digital display board that shows when the next bus will arrive was opened on March 11 after 18 months of construction, according to the Washington Post.
"It's unfathomable to me that it could cost that much," an Arlington resident told CBS.
According to the news channel, nearby bus stops that are more enclosed and offer more protection from the rain and wind cost only 30,000 dollars.
Some 800,000 dollars of the money used to build the super stop came from federal and state tax dollars via grants, CNN has revealed.
Reacting to the outrage, Arlington County and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) said in a press release on Thursday that they would launch an investigation into the project so they can "pinpoint ways that Arlington could cut costs moving forward." (ANI)
