US school kindergarten lesson on enactment of slave auction leaves parents outraged

New York , Fri, 22 Feb 2013 ANI

New York, Feb 22 (ANI): A US kindergarten teacher had allegedly asked students to act out a slave auction during a class on slavery, sparking outrage among the parents.

The incident happened at the MacMillan International Academy in Montgomery, Alabama, where two white five year-old children were chosen to be the 'masters' at the auction by the teacher, who also allegedly gave the kids a coloring sheet depicting a slave auction, New York Daily News reports.

According to a parent Jamelle Young, the teacher had persuaded the children to act out the auction despite their repeated refusals and had also told the students to go home and ask their parents if they would 'ever go back into slavery'.

Young, who maintained that the topic of slavery should be taught at higher classes, further accused the school principal of not taking any action against the teacher.

Young added that instead, the principal said that the teacher had no intention of being offensive and that slavery is taught throughout history in just about every grade level. (ANI)
