People asking for likes on Facebook mere 'attention seekers'

Sydney , Thu, 07 Feb 2013 ANI

Sydney, Feb 7(ANI): Experts have claimed people who constantly request random people on Facebook to like their pages, pictures, status etc on the social networking website, do so to seek attention.

From puppies to Australia Day parties, cars and trips to Disneyland, bloggers are putting their case to the online community with varying degrees of sincerity and success, but experts claim these are just ways to gain attention from anonymous people on the website, Couriermail.com.au reports.

According to University of Queensland lecturer and social media researcher Nic Carah, these memes, as they are known, are often just a means of attracting attention.

Dr Carah said there are lots of ways in which social media encourages us to seek out the attention of others with likes, comments, tags, friends, followers etcetera, and he thinks this just fits within those practices.

Dr Carah added people get a buzz out of getting a 1000 likes because it's that thrill of being visible and also the thrill of having some anonymous public intervene in their life.

The lecturer positions this activity within broader trends seen online, namely shaming and attention.

Dr Carah said the kids are doing it it's like they're shaming their parent into it, and if the parent is doing it, it's like they're shaming others into it.

A Massachusetts' family's plea for 1000 likes to persuade their dad to buy them a cat attracted more than 110,000 likes and 100,000 shares in just five days, the paper said.

One family took advantage of the trend to promote organ donation and raise awareness about congenital heart defects following the passing of their dad last year, the paper reporter. (ANI)
