S. Korea okays restart of troubled nuclear reactor

Seoul, Wed, 02 Jan 2013 ANI

Seoul, Jan. 2 (Xinhua-ANI): South Korea has given the go-ahead to restart a nuclear reactor previously shut down for safety reasons, the country's nuclear watchdog said Wednesday.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said it approved the operation of the Unit 6 reactor at the Yeonggwang plant, located some 330 km southwest of Seoul, after safety checks.

Two reactors at the nuclear plant-the Unit 5 and Unit 6 -- were forced to shut down in November after they were discovered to contain parts with forged quality and safety warranties.

"All the parts that had been provided with fake certificates have been replaced, and safety checks required before the resumption of the nuclear reactor have been completed," the safety commission said in a statement.

The Unit 5 reactor was already given the green light to resume its operation on Dec. 31. South Korea operates 23 reactors nationwide, supplying about 35 percent of the country's electricity. (Xinhua-ANI)
