Cardiovascular diseases tops the list of cause of deaths in Cuba, and according to an expert, more than 20,000 people dies every year from the ailments related to heart.
Eduardo Rivas, president of the Cuban Society of Cardiology, said to media Friday that problems related to coronary arteries, causes 80 percent of the deaths from heart failures, most of the cases were related to acute cardiac strokes.
Rivas cautioned that a growing number of young Cubans are suffering from these ailments and called for preventive measures so that the impact of cardiovascular diseases on Cuba's work force could be checked, Xinhua reports.
Apart from keeping a tab on chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol, the expert emphasized the importance of physical exercise, healthy diet and maintaining proper weight.
