A bio medical engineering company has claimed to find out an innovative medicine administration system that can replace the painful use of insulin and protein injections used for curing diabetes and cancer simultaneously.
According to media reports, an US company Zetroz has designed a new pill 'uPill' which contains ultrasound to speed up drug delivery. These pills are administered orally.
Usually, ultrasound is used to accelerate the transfer of drugs through skin as the ultrasound waves heat up the skin cells, which enhances the absorption of molecules up to 10 times.
This uPill works on the same theory as it contains an ultrasonic coating that releases ultrasonic waves after reaching in the gastrointestinal tracts. The ultrasound increases the absorption of drugs.
According to Daniel Anderson, one of the researchers in the team of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which conducted the research, 'the required drug would be applied as a coating to the uPill and, once swallowed, the device will send ultrasound waves through the patient's gut to aid absorption. It will then pass through the digestive system, as a camera pill does.'
However, he also added that testing is going on upon animals to check it out, how safely it passes to the gut?
The device was presented at the IdeaStream conference at MIT in May.
Anderson hopes the uPill could hit the market in the next couple of years.
"It is far too early to claim victory but we are excited about the potential applications. It could create an entirely new class of drugs," he said.
But the relief won't come cheap, as each pill will cost 20 dollars to 30 dollars.
