Sixteen commuters including three women were killed Tuesday morning when an overloaded Tata Magic Vehicle collided with Kasganj (Kanshi Ram Nagar) bound Mathura-Kasganj passenger train at an unmanned railway crossing at mendu in Hathras (Mahamaya Nagar) district of Aligarh Division.
Four severely injured have been referred to Aligarh district hospital for treatment. The accident took place at about 7.30am.
SDM for Hathras has informed that another train accident had happened in the past at the same crossing. After the accident, the villagers lodged a protest at the spot seeking proper railway crossing after the accident. The track has been cleared and trains are now going smoothly.
According to a senior police oficer, an overloaded van was going to Hathras to see the post mortem of one Munne Khan (40) who had committed suicide last night in Sathiya villege of Sasni Tehsil.
The van was trying to cross the railway crossing despite viewing the passenger train was approaching to the crossing.
The new rail minister Mukul Roy has announced an ex-gratia of Rs.2-lakh to the kin of the deceased while Rs. 15,000 to those who got injuries.
There are 14,853 unmanned railway crossings in the country.
