Ex-US congress member calls for neuroscientist Aafia Siddiqui's repatriation to Pak

Islamabad, Dec. 6 (ANI): Former US Congress member Cynthia McKinney has called for the repatriation of neuroscientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui to Pakistan.

"I am here for Dr Aafia Siddiqui. When I first learned of her situation, I decided to do all that I could do to reverse the injustice to this poor innocent woman," The Express Tribune quoted McKinney, as saying.

Mckinney is on a week-long visit to Pakistan as part of her "Give US our daughter back" campaign for repatriation of Siddiqui to Pakistan. She revealed that internationally, many people have signed a petition calling for her release.

Siddiqui, whose conviction was widely criticized in Pakistan, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard Berman in September 2010. A New York federal jury convicted her of attempted murder, armed assault and other charges.

She was arrested in July 2008 by Afghan police, who said she was carrying 900 grams of sodium cyanide and crumpled notes referring to mass casualty attacks and New York landmarks.

The day after her arrest, she grabbed an M-4 rifle in her interrogation room and started shooting while yelling "death to America". No one was hit, but Siddiqui was shot and wounded in response, according to U.S. prosecutors.

An American court had recently upheld the conviction and 86-year prison sentence of Siddiqui. (ANI)
