Beijing, Nov 2 (IANS) A man wrongly imprisoned for 11 years in China has been given a compensation of 820,000 yuan (about $131,400), the highest such award in the country.
Huang Liyi from Kaiping city received the money Monday from Guangdong Higher People's Court, which awarded him "for loss of freedom and psychological damage".
Huang was convicted of fraud by the court and was sentenced to life in prison in November 2000, the Global Times reported Friday.
The court found that Huang delivered five checks from his customers to three suppliers whom he owed the money. The checks bounced and the suppliers sued him.
One of Huang's customers who signed one of the checks committed suicide while the others fled the city, according to the newspaper.
Huang's appeals to provincial higher court were repeatedly rejected until 2009, when the court ordered a new trial. He was declared not guilty and freed in July 2010.
"The compensation from the state is one of the highest in the country," said Dai Yannan, a civil rights lawyer from a law firm.
