China today launched a criminal investigation on Bo Xilai, a former Communist Party leader who has been accused of abuse of power, bribe-taking and violating party discipline.
A day earlier, Mr. Bo was stripped of his legal immunity and expelled from the country's Parliament.
The investigation comes just ahead of the November 8, when Communist Party Congress of China will go for its 10-yearly power transition.
His wife, Gu Kailai, was jailed in August for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood.
Former Deputy Police Chief Wang Lijun fled to the US consulate in Chongqing and accused Mr Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, in the death of Mr Heywood, a British businessman. It triggered an investigation on Bo and his family.
Bo (63) has not been seen in public since the investigation started.
Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee expelled Bo from the government last month, after being stripped of leadership positions in April.
He once was considered a top contender for Politburo Standing Committee, the team of 9 politicians who effectively rule China.
