Tata Power operationalises unit III of Mundra plant

New Delhi,Business/Economy, Mon, 08 Oct 2012 IANS

New Delhi, Oct 8 (IANS) Tata Power Monday said the 800-MW Unit III of its ultra mega power project (UMPP) in Mundra, Gujarat, has been operationalised, raising the company's total generation capacity to 6,899 MW.

The Mundra project is the country's first UMPP. Tata Power, India's largest integrated power utility, commissioned Unit I of the UMPP in March and Unit II in July 2012.

With Monday's synchronization of Unit 3 by wholly owned subsidiary Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL), the thermal power generation capacity of Tata Power stands at 6,047 MW and the generation through clean sources such as hydro, wind and solar stands at 852 MW, the company said.

"This is a significant milestone given the critical power shortage situation in the country. The Mundra power plant is not only a world-class UMPP providing affordable power but is also one of the most efficient and environment friendly plant due to the super critical technology and various environment initiatives supporting this state-of-the-art power plant," said Anil Sardana, Tata Power managing director.

CGPL has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with seven procurers (distribution licensees) from five states -- Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab for the sale of contracted capacity.

The 4,000 MW Mundra UMPP is the first of the UMPPs that heralds the entry of 800 MW supercritical boiler technology in India, which is environment friendly and efficient.
