Israeli PM Netanyahu suggests he is 'not backing Romney'

Washington, Sat, 22 Sep 2012 ANI

Washington, Sept 22 (ANI): Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly promised the Obama camp he has no plans to 'interfere' with the campaign before the election, suggesting that he was not backing presidential contender Mitt Romney.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Netanyahu sent his defense minister, Ehud Barak, to deliver a goodwill message to Chicago mayor and former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel on Thursday.

This marks the second time in six days the Israeli leader has sought to distance himself from the perception he is agitating for Obama's defeat in November.

According to ABC News, when asked if he thought 'governor Mitt Romney as President Romney make Israel safer,' Netanyahu demurred.

"I'm not going to be drawn into the American election. And what's guiding my statements is not the American political calendar, but the Iranian nuclear calendar," the report quoted Netanyahu, as saying.

"I'm talking to [President Obama]. I just talked to him the other day. We are in close consultation. We're trying to prevent that. It's really not a partisan issue. It's a policy issue, not a partisan issue," he added.

According to the report, Netanyahu's remarks came despite close personal ties to Mitt Romney and recent comments suggesting he was unhappy with the Obama administration's policies on Iran. (ANI)
