New Delhi, Sep 6 (ANI): Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Thursday said motivated rumours and irresponsible use of social networking media pose a new challenge to the security forces of the country.
Addressing the three-day annual DGPs/IGPs conference here, Shinde said: "There is increasing evidence of resort taken by terrorists to the cyber-space domain. The recent incident in Bengaluru in Karnataka, Pune in Maharashtra and other states of the country where motivated rumours and irresponsible use of the social media networking media posed a new challenge."
"Cyber-space by providing a pervasive infrastructure for discreet communication is proving to be a facilitator for the malevolent seeking to enlist new recruits and to purvey a distorted version of the reality," he added.
He further said he government is aware about the continuous thrust of Pakistan based Islamic groups to infiltrate terrorists and hardware across International Border and LoC.
The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will address the DGPs/IGPs conference, which is being organised by the Intelligence Bureau, on Saturday.
DGPs/ IGPs will have a separate interactive session with Prime Minister during which they will brief him on key policing and Internal Security issues.
The objectives of the conference are to provide an interactive platform for senior police professionals and security administrators in the country to discuss and debate diverse national security-related issues, as also the various operational, infrastructural and welfare-related problems faced by the police.
Its deliberations include formulation and sharing of professional practices and processes in tackling challenges relating to crime control and law and order management besides internal security threats such as terrorism, insurgency, left wing extremism, espionage and organised crime.
Further, the conference offers opportunities for generation and exchange of new ideas on capacity building for the police in respect of manpower, training, logistics and advanced technology.
The Intelligence Bureau organised the first ever conference of the IGPs in India in 1920 and since then, these conferences have been held regularly at New Delhi.
In the post-independence period, the first such conference was organised in the year 1950 at Delhi. To begin with, it was a biennial event, but after 1973, it became an annual meeting for the Heads of Police Organisations of the States/Union Territories and of the Central Police Organisations.
