'Careless' Australians warned to change online passwords to protect 'digital wallets'

Sydney, Tue, 04 Sep 2012 ANI

Sydney, Sept. 4 (ANI): Australians are being careless with their online passwords and are warned to change their habits to protect their digital wallets, a new research has revealed.

Results released by PayPal found that 65 percent of Australians are more careful with their ATM or credit card PINs than their online passwords, despite the increasing number of people choosing to go online to shop, store personal information and buy goods.

According to the Herald Sun, PayPal spokesman Adrian Christie said Australians have a 'long way to go' when it comes to protecting their online information.

"If you look at the ATM that's been in Australia since the '70s, people are very familiar with the protocols around how to protect yourself when using an ATM," he said.

"What we are encouraging people to do is to stop and think about how they are acting when they are using their digital wallet and make sure they put as much thought into the security protocols around their passwords as they do with other payment forms," he added.

According to the report, Christie said 4.7 million Australians have a digital wallet today.

A digital wallet allows customers to make electronic transactions quickly and securely by having your financial information stored on devices, including a mobile phone or tablet, and it uses wireless technologies to make a transaction, the report said.

The survey found that 87 percent of respondents did not believe anyone could guess their passwords, despite one in four, 22 percent, admitting they include personal information in their passwords, the report said.

According to the report, the University of Canberra's director at the Centre for Internet Safety Alastair MacGibbon said: "Consumer protection begins with the password."

He said as technology increasingly grows and more people transact online "password maintenance and security is essential to protecting our identity and our money." (ANI)
