Birmingham, July 4 (ANI): Australia's Twenty20 captain George Bailey, who is an emerging fixture in the one-day team, wants to permanently fix his place in the Test side, preferably for next year's Ashes.
The 29-year-old Tasmanian skipper was a surprise choice to take charge of Australia's T20 team, having not even played for the country before in any senior format.
However, as there is every chance that seniors Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey may not be around for Australia's Test tour of England in a year's time, Bailey is desperate to become more than simply a limited-overs option, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Bailey's stint in England will not wind up with the fifth and final match of the campaign at Old Trafford next week. He will be a part of the Australia A tour that will follow the one-day series and plans to use that to press his claim in the Test side.
"When Test spots have come up in the last few years it's just been a matter of being in the right place at the right time," Bailey said.
"I don't think this will be any different. I pushed really hard to be on that A tour. There is a lot of other cricket on around it and after it but it's something I thought was really important because I just don't think this is the time to be missing any form of red-ball cricket.
"I don't care what level it is or who it's for. I think any time you can be putting runs on at this stage is going to be really important." (ANI)
