Djokovic declares 'Wimbledon defence' to be well on target

Sydney, Sun, 24 Jun 2012 ANI

Sydney, June 24 (ANI): Tennis ace Novak Djokovic has declared he is on target to defend his Wimbledon title, after narrowly missing out on the French Open to Spaniard Rafael Nadal this year.

The Serbian world champion is set to open proceedings on the All England Club's centre court tomorrow against former world No. 1, Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero with a brief grasscourt preparation.

"I'm happy with the way things are going. I'm striking the the ball well, I feel good on grass and I'll be ready. I like to focus on every year separately but I'm satisfied with how I'm feeling," News.com.au quoted Djokovic, as saying.

Djokovic lost the rain-interrupted French Open in four sets to Nadal and, after almost becoming the first male since Rod Laver in 1969 to simultaneously hold all four majors, rested for a week before practising on grass.

"I won Wimbledon last year and became No. 1 in the world, something I always dreamed of achieving. I can't complain about my results and I've had a fantastic career. But I still feel that there are plenty of years to come," the five time Grand Slam winner said.

"It takes a little bit of time to adjust because clay is the slowest surface in tennis, whereas grass is the fastest. It's different types of movement, but I have a couple more days to get ready," he added. (ANI)
