Shanghai, June 3 (IANS) This Chinese business hub is facing a significant surge in narcotics cases. Over 1,000 people have been arrested this year for using drugs - an increase of 35 percent compared to the same period last year.
According to the Shanghai Political and Law Commission, police dealt with 995 drugs-related cases and held 1,114 suspects from January to April, the China Daily reported.

Synthetic drugs like methamphetamine - generally known as "ice" - have become the most popular drug among dealers and users, accounting for 80 percent among the seized contraband this year.
Officials said dealers now communicate through new distribution channels like the internet.
There were 55,686 registered drug users in the city, and 34,247 were still undergoing treatment.
Last month, two men from Hong Kong were sentenced to death and 15 years respectively for smuggling around six kg of cocaine from Qatar to Shanghai in October 2011.
