Myanmar to halt jade mining in Kachin amid security concerns

Rangoon, Sun, 27 May 2012 ANI

Rangoon, May 27 (Xinhua-ANI): Myanmar authorities will suspend all jade mining work by private companies in the northernmost state of Kachin starting the end of this month, local media reported Sunday.

Quoting a notification of the Ministry of Mines, the Voice said the suspension has to be made as there are still armed conflicts in Pha Kant area, making it unsafe there.

As traffic was cut during the clashes, thousands of workers fled Pha Kant daily, it said.

In time of clashes, hundreds of jade mining companies had to pay a large sum of tax money to the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), it added.

In recent months, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) launched a series of attacks on passenger trains, rails and bridges on Myikyina-Mandalay railroad.

In the latest development, the KIA blew up four towers of a 230- KV Shweli-Mansan national power grid in Namkham, Shan state in upper Myanmar last weekend.

The government and the KIA have made three rounds of peace talks in China's border town of Ruili, but the fightings are still getting intensified, forcing more than 70,000 people to flee the clashes. (Xinhua-ANI)
