US Senate passes bill to tighten sanctions against Iran

Washington, Tue, 22 May 2012 ANI

Washington, May 22 (ANI): The US Senate has reportedly approved a bill to tighten sanctions against Iran in order to force the Islamic nation to halt their nuclear activities.

The new sanctions will target Iran's Revolutionary Guard and investigate its role in the export of oil from the country.

The sanctions will also make it mandatory for U.S.-listed firms to disclose any Iran-related business to the authorities, The BBC reports.

"Today the U.S. Senate put Iranian leaders on notice that they must halt all uranium enrichment activities or face another round of economic sanctions," the report quoted Republican senator Mark Kirk, a co-author of the bill, as saying.

The move was aimed at cutting Tehran's oil revenues as its central bank is the principal clearing facility for payment for Iran's oil exports.

Shortly after the bill was passed, Democratic senator Robert Menendez said that the move indicated US willingness to keep the pressure on Tehran.

"This bill is another tool that will demonstrate to Iran that the United States is not backing down," Menendez said.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has also been putting pressure on Asian countries such as India, China, Japan and South Korea, to reduce their oil intake from Tehran. (ANI)
