Salman Khurshid ready to take responsibility for poll debacle in UP

New Delhi, Wed, 02 May 2012 ANI

New Delhi, May 2(ANI): Law Minister Salman Khurshid on Wednesday said that he is ready to take the responsibility for the Congress' poll debacle in Uttar Pradesh (UP) Assembly elections.

A high power committee, headed by Defence Minister AK Antony and consisting of Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit and Minister for Power Sushil Kumar Shinde has given their assessment of the party's dismal performance.

Antony had, reportedly, mentioned that some Congress party leaders including, Khurshid were responsible for turning the tide against the party by making communally sensitive statements.

Khurshid, while talking to mediapersons, said that he was ready to accept the responsibility for his party's defeat, but added that it would be "unfair" to comment on the report as it has not been released yet.

"Of course we take responsibility. As for myself and I am sure for my colleagues, that's our party and our field, that's our work, and if we do not succeed we are responsible. But to say that there is something in the report would be unfair because the report has not come," he said.

Antony has reportedly given a clean chit to Rahul Gandhi.

Congress leader Jagadambika Pal said that it was inappropriate to fix the responsibility for party's poor show on Rahul Gandhi

"There was polarization of the votes and they got divided on the basis of castes. When there is polarization of castes, then the issues like development and unemployment become redundant. So it would be unfair to assess the hardwork undertaken by Rahul Gandhi," the Congressman said.

The Congress had managed to win only 28 of the 403 seats on offer in UP legislature in a bitter election blow to Rahul Gandhi, who had staked his political future on reviving his party's fortunes in the state. (ANI)
