New Delhi, April 30 (IANS) Home Minister P. Chidambaram Monday said the nation has welcomed the nomination of ace cricketer Sachin Tendulkar to the Rajya Sabha.
He was responding to a question on Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's allegation that Sachin's nomination was "The Dirty Picture" of the Congress.
"I don't know about 'The Dirty Picture' because I have not watched it," Chidambaram said referring to the recent National Award-winning movie, starring Vidya Balan.
"The majority has welcomed the decision to nominate Tendulakar to Rajya Sabha," Chidambaram said.
Thackeray had said Sunday that Tendulkar's nomination was the Congress's "dirtiest play".
"The real 'Dirty Picture' is this," he remarked.
Chidambaram, when asked to react to constitutional experts noting that Tendulkar's appointment was invalid as he was only a sportsperson and the constitution does not provide for such an appointment, said that was not the government's reading of the provisions.
"I think the constitutional provision is very clear. Tendulkar's nomination is perfectly valid under that provision," he added.
