BJP taunts Congress as Bangaru Laxman resigns

New Delhi, Mon, 30 Apr 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Apr 30(ANI): Hours after Bangaru Laxman stepped down from the party's national executive committee, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday hit out at the ruling Congress party and charged it of indulging in tactics to save its allegedlycorrupt ministers.

BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain alleged that the Congress was expert in saving the corrupt and awarding ministerial post to tainted persons.

"Bangaru Laxman has resigned from the national executive of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Our national chief Nitin Gadkari has accepted his resignation. The Congress should do some introspection," said Hussain.

"The Congress, which indulges in tactics to save the corrupt ministers, should not become a laughing stock in the country. The country knows that many tainted persons are holding ministerial positions. It is an expert in protecting the corrupt," he added.

Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Bangaru Laxman, who was sentenced to a four-year jail term on charges of corruption, resigned from the party's national executive committee earlier today.

Laxman was sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined lakh in connection with the fictitious arms deal case on Saturday.

He was earlier convicted for accepting a bribe from a fake arms dealer in exchange for recommending to the Defence Ministry a request to award the dealers a contract to supply thermal binoculars to the army.

Laxman, a former minister, was convicted on the basis of an on camera sting operation at the BJP headquarters.

He had to quit as BJP president shortly after the sting operation was exposed. (ANI)
