New Delhi, April 25 (IANS) Social activist Anna Hazare Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking him to implement the United Nations (UN) convention against corruption, to which India is a signatory.
"India became a signatory to the convention after understanding the nuances and need to end the corruption menace in the country. It has been nine years since India signed this convention but it is unfortunate that, on the ground, the situation remains unchanged as no action has been taken," said Hazare.
According to Hazare, despite being a signatory, the Indian government is not letting the institutions established to fight corruption function independently.
"Is it not prudent to assume that the government doesn't want to strengthen such institutions? Till rampant corruption is nipped at the bud, the future of our country would be bleak," he added.
