'Gentle giant' Ambrose says he let his bowling do the talking for him

Port of Spain (West Indies), Ape 22(ANI): Legendary West Indies' fast bowler Curtly Ambrose has said that during his playing days, he never used to speak much since he let his bowling do the talking for him.

Nearly 17 years ago to the day at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, he and Steve Waugh were involved in a heated confrontation, which commentator Tony Cozier said at the time 'will be discussed for many years to come by those who watched it'.

But Ambrose, who was known as a 'gentle giant' during his playing days, believes he doesn't get into a verbal war of words with any batsman, but his altercation with Waugh was due to him losing control over himself during the high-pressured series.

"I don't get into a verbal confrontation with a batsman, I let the ball do the talking for me, but it was a high-pressured series and I just lost it for a moment," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Ambrose, as saying.

Ambrose still holds the utmost respect and admiration for Waugh, and said. "I was quite glad it never went any further."

Around 19 years ago Dean Jones to the bewilderment of his teammates, raised Ambrose's fury by asking the quick to take off the sweatbands on his right wrist during an ODI final, and Ambrose responded by taking a match-winning 5-32.

"I remember that clearly. I was a bit surprised. I was more upset with that situation than the one with Waugh, because I had been wearing the wristbands all my career," Ambrose said.

"And I found it strange. I was really, really upset. I reluctantly took them off and you know what happened then," he added. (ANI)
