Ex-Maldivan president in India, to meet Manmohan Singh on Monday

New Delhi, Wed, 18 Apr 2012 ANI

New Delhi, April 18 (Xinhua-ANI): Ousted Maldivian President Mohammad Nasheed, who is in India on a six-day visit, has said he would meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday as part of his efforts to prove he is the rightful leader of the archipelago nation.

"There is a change of government in Maldives and we want to explain the situation to the Indian government. I will be meeting the Indian leadership on 23rd of this month. We want more Indian assistance in bringing democracy back," Nasheed said in an interview published Wednesday.

While stating that India has its difficulties in dealing with its neighbors, the ousted president said its influence is paramount in the region.

The former president Wednesday delivered a talk on ' Consolidation of Democracy in Maldives' at Observer Research Foundation in the national capital, where he slammed the Indian mission in Male for its role during the coup.

"I cannot understand why the (Indian) High Commissioner did not see what was unfolding. Neither can I understand his briefs and utterances," he said, criticizing India's quick recognition of the President Mohammad Waheed's government.

He added: "There is a need to have early elections in Maldives." (Xinhua-ANI)
