'Unconscious' Lockerbie bomber may not recover after failed blood transfusion

London, Tue, 17 Apr 2012 ANI

London, Apr. 17 (ANI): Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, who is suffering from terminal cancer, is unconscious and may not wake up, sources have revealed.

Sources at a private clinic in Tripoli, where 60-year-old Al Megrahi underwent an emergency blood transfusion on Friday, revealed that he remained 'critical' and had not spoken for almost two weeks.

"He slipped into an unconscious state soon after the transfusion and may never wake up," The Daily Mail quoted a source, as saying.

A close family friend confirmed the prognosis, saying Al-Megrahi's condition had deteriorated 'very seriously' over the past three days.

According to the paper, a family of Al Megrahi said they would be surprised if he lived for more than 'a short while more'.

Al Megrahi was the only person convicted in 2001 of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 as it flew to New York from London.

All 259 people aboard the airliner died and 11 others in the town of Lockerbie were killed by falling wreckage. (ANI)
