Beijing, Apr 14 (ANI): Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei is reportedly suing the Beijing tax authorities for violating the law by imposing a 2.4 million dollars tax evasion penalty on the company he works for without allowing him to access the firm's financial records.
Weiwei said local tax authorities have acted illegally, limiting his access to his company's financial records and to the employees who oversaw them.
"They don't even try to give us a proper procedure or play right. The only possibility is to sue them in court," The Wall Street Journal quoted Weiwei, as saying.
Weiwei said that the court authorities would decide within a week whether to accept the case.
According to the paper, Beijing tax authorities have alleged Weiwei evaded taxes through his design company, Beijing Fake Cultural Development Ltd.
The artist, however, claims that authorities withheld financial records, at one point giving him incomplete copies of documents just before leveling a decision against him.
The suit marks Weiwei's latest effort to push back against authorities, which have kept him under heavy surveillance since his release from custody last year. (ANI)
