Washington, Apr 9(ANI): The United States has said that it is ready to help India and Pakistan resolve their differences over the Siachen glacier issue only if both sides request it to do so.
India strongly opposes third-party involvement in its disputes with Pakistan, and has rejected all international offers for help.
The US, however, said it is willing to go beyond the rescue operation on the glacier, where an avalanche killed 139 Pakistani soldiers, and resolve the dispute in an amicable manner.
US State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said that the country has sent a rescue team to the region on Pakistan's request.
"We have made clear to both India and Pakistan that we are prepared to be supportive in any way that might be helpful. But primarily we see this being settled by dialogue between them," The Dawn quoted Nuland, as saying.
"At the request of the government of Pakistan, the US government did deploy an eight-man US military alpine search-and-rescue team from Kabul to Islamabad," she added.
She said the team arrived in Islamabad on Sunday, and is waiting for instructions to be deployed in Siachen.
"We're discussing with the Pakistani military how best they might be used. But we stand by to assist, and to my knowledge we haven't had any additional requests from Pakistan," a US official said. (ANI)
