London, Apr 10 (ANI): More than 200,000 historical documents about the Titanic have been put up online as the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking approaches.

They include the will of ship captain Edward J Smith - killed in the disaster - and pictures of the gravestones of 121 of the people who perished, the Mirror reported.

The website has a list of passenger and crew names, nationalities and occupations, along with more than 300 coroner inquest files and records of the 330 bodies recovered at sea.

There is also a passenger list for the Carpathia, which rescued more than 700 people from the Titanic.

The records detail the distinguishing features of body number 326, which was never identified.

The records reads, "Male, 50, light hair. Wore steward's white coat, light check overalls. Coatmaker's mark Baker and Co, Southampton. Possibly a steward. Buried at sea."

Ancestry.co.uk said its collection was the most comprehensive ever published online.

"Over the generations, many families may have heard rumours that they had an ancestor aboard the Titanic," the Mirror quoted a spokeswoman as saying.

"We're very pleased to be able to offer access to these valuable records for free, enabling thousands to uncover the story of that tragic voyage," she added.

The Titanic sank on its maiden voyage to New York after hitting an iceberg in the Atlantic on April 15, 1912. More than 1,500 people died. (ANI)
